5 Reasons to Focus on 1 Goal for 100 Days

100 days ago I started a plan to tackle my number 1 goal in 100 days.  Since I recently started my CFO Services consulting business, my number one goal was based on revenue and clients. As most business owners know, revenue cures many problems.  I used The Freedom Journal by John Lee Dumas to help me meet my goal.  Each day for 100 days, I started the morning writing down the following:

  • One thing I am grateful for.
  • My 100-day goal.
  • My main focus for the day.
  • 2 things I was doing that day to help me achieve the goal.
  • 3 things I was going to accomplish that day.
  • My action plan for the day. I would make sure everything important was on my calendar.

At the end of the day I would assess the day by documenting the following:

  • 2 good things that happened that day.
  • 2 things I struggled with that day.
  • 2 solutions for those struggles.
  • What is going to make tomorrow a great day?

I learned quite a bit about myself and my process for hitting goals. I will cut to the chase. I did not hit my goal so don’t think just because you adopt the above course of action for 100 days that you will automatically hit your goal. Even though I didn’t hit my goal, I am setting a new and better goal for the next 100 days. So if it didn’t work, then why am I doing it again? Below are 5 reasons why I am doing this again:

Reason #1 – Repetition leads to increased focus

Whenever we do something over and over again, it becomes a habit.  Because I would journal each day all that I mentioned above, I began to feel like something was missing if I didn’t do it. It was almost like forgetting to brush my teeth.  It became so ingrained in my daily habits that I would more often think about what I am grateful for. Also, during the day, I would often think about my main goal.  I began realizing throughout the 100 days how easy it is to get off track.  It is easy to allow other people or seemingly good ideas to fill the schedule.  I remember driving home from numerous meetings saying to myself “Now what did that have to do with my main goal?”

Another benefit from repetition is that I began to look at the following day’s schedule the night before and finalizing my schedule in the morning. I almost felt like I was not working if I hadn’t reviewed my calendar and scheduled my activities.

Reason #2 – Learning from my mistakes

I definitely made mistakes in the last 100 days that kept me from hitting my revenue target.  As Albert Einstein said, “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.”  I learned that I didn’t have a good system for keeping track of my meetings and following up with key contacts and referral partners.  I have since started using Vipor to start to organize my contacts into different categories (this app calls them Orbits). I make sure that I log meeting notes and put a follow-up task on my calendar right after the first meeting.

I learned much more but I have to keep this short.

Reasons #3 – I most likely got further than where I would have been otherwise

Upon looking back, there are many measurements for hitting a revenue goal. I am doubtful that I would have met and reached out to as many people as I did if I didn’t have this goal. Also, my pipeline of opportunities is larger due to all the work I did to reach the goal.

Goals need to be specific, measurable, actionable, realistic, and time-bound.  I think my goal met this definition but it was a stretch goal.  I believe with more focus and learning from my mistakes, I can meet my new goal in the next 100 days.

Reason # 4 – Recording and seeing progress breeds perseverance

It is easy to get frustrated when progress seems slow in meeting goals. I know I have definitely had moments of frustration. There is a tendency for me to focus on the negative. Each day I would be sure to write down the good things that happened. There were some days when I really had to struggle to think of good things. There were other days when it was harder to come up with the struggles (these were few and far between). By writing down and getting in the habit of thinking this way, I was able to see progress. “The Freedom Journal” has 10-day sprints and 25-day checkups. It was fun to see the surprisingly good things that happened in the last 10 or 25 days. The progress helped keep me going.

Reason #5 – Consistency = Success

I am a fan of consistency.  I believe consistency helps build habits. So much progress can be made by doing a little bit each day. I wrote more about consistency in my post “Consistency is Powerful”.  How did this 100-day plan help with consistency?  I started doing important things each day such as reviewing my calendar and scheduling my day.  I started keeping track and following up with prospects, strategic partners, and other contacts. The momentum has started so I just have to keep it going in the next 100 days.


I would encourage you to try “The Freedom Journal“.  It even has inspiring quotes and good resources to look into.  If you don’t want to do that, you should at least journal in the morning and evening following the outline above. That is what I am going to do.  The habit has started, the momentum is growing, and the future is unlimited.
