In early 2018, I had a goal to write a book Forecast Your Future: How Small Businesses Exchange Stress and Chaos for Cash and Clarity. I have heard statistics that say that 80% or up to 90% of Americans want to write a book. I was one of the masses. How was I going to actually accomplish this goal while providing CFO Services my clients? I found that the content was not as difficult as I had much of this written and I really enjoyed this part. Then, came the editing process. Wow, I way underestimated the work involved in this. It took 3 times longer and many more revisions than I thought. I could not give up. I had to accomplish this goal. Below are 5 reasons why accomplishing a goal is important for you.
Once you accomplish a key goal and you tell everyone, nobody can take this away. When I think of my key accomplishment in 2018, I will always remember publishing my book. I remember starting my business back in 2016 and I had a key revenue goal to survive and I was able to accomplish it. Yes, many times goals take longer than you want, but the goal is met and that is all that counts. Recently, I set another revenue goal, made appointments, did presentations, and was able to accomplish this goal also. How exciting is it when you accomplish a key goal?
People are watching us when we set out to do a difficult goal. I know when I started my business, so many people knew what I was doing. I told everyone. And I remember during times of challenge that I felt like giving up. My kids were upset when I even talked about quitting. They didn’t want me to give up. When we do get a key goal accomplished, other people feel more emboldened to do the same. They can see the possibilities. We can have more influence and make an even larger impact.
I am not sure why anyone would want to live a life constantly distracted and putting out fires. They would be reactive and at the mercy of others constantly. I wrote about some of this in my blog “Are You a Reactor, Worker, Dreamer or Leader?”. I have worked in these crazy, distracting environments, and they are depressing. Basically, you never feel like you are moving forward. It feels like you are on a treadmill going nowhere. When you are focused on accomplishing key goals and you start to get results, it is so much more fun.
When you start actually accomplishing a goal, you will gain more confidence. You will then want to set and accomplish more goals. You know what is possible, and you will continue to do what it takes. Confidence is so important when doing anything great. I am not saying there aren’t doubts along the way. When you go somewhere you haven’t been before, there can be doubts. I have some challenging goals this year, but I also know I have accomplished many goals before, which gives me more confidence that my new goals can be accomplished.
“A goal properly set is halfway reached.” – Zig Ziglar
“Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.” Tony Robbins
“Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare.” Japanese Proverb
“Goals are the fuel in the furnace of achievement.” Brian Tracey
“What you get by achieving goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.” Henry David Thoreau
“Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained,” Proverbs 29:18a
As a Christian, I strongly believe that God wants us to set goals, have a vision, and plan. He wants us to plant seeds and work hard and smart. There is so much wisdom in Proverbs. I believe strongly in praying for the wisdom which is key to making any adjustments and staying the course to accomplish a key goal. We should follow the wisdom of the ages and the experts who went before us and did great things.
