One of the challenges I have found in both business and life is to determine when a change needs to be made. When is changing a good thing? When is changing not so good? As a business grows, change is inevitable, and it is important to have the systems and processes to handle it. The same is important in life spiritually, intellectually, physically, and emotionally.

My career in finance and accounting has been full of change. New systems, reports, processes, acquisitions, promotions, new jobs, and even now my own business have all brought change for me at various points. Sometimes I have held on too long to familiarity, and sometimes I took the leap.

Below are 5 ways in which change is good.

1. Improvement & Growth

As a business increases transactions, revenue, and employees, there has to be a change in processes, finance, cash flow, and reports. Whenever a system is implemented that will allow for scalable growth in an organization, change is good. It can be hard to implement a new accounting system or create a new billing system, but in the end, it is worth it and necessary. In all situations, there was always more work before it became less work.

Reading, learning something new, implementing a new process, or accepting new ideas is challenging, but it always leads to growth.

2. Future View

Developing a life plan is essential to have a future view of living. Even though we want to be present in our life, we need to think about where we want to be next year, 3 years, or even 5 years from now. It is very effective to write this down in a Life Plan and review and adjust on a regular basis.

Before making a change, think about how this change could result in something better in the future. Starting a business with a well-documented plan can be a positive change if it leads to doing the work you love and securing more financial freedom. Hiring for a new position is scary at first, but it can be very positive if it puts your business in a place to be more competitive, grow revenues, and have more influence in the marketplace.

The key is that there is a long-term vision to see the end. “Begin with the end in mind” which is one of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

3. Optimistic

Any change that has a negative view might not be the right kind of change. What is a negative view?  I am thinking that you are changing just because a competitor is doing it but you go into it with pessimism. Any change needs to be thought of as eventually being positive. If the people in the organization are negative, resentful, or uncooperative, change will not work of course. Focusing on the improvement, growth, and the positive future of the business will lead to optimism and can help with change management.

4. Peace

Any change made out of revenge, anger, frustration, or fear is not usually Good Change. This is the hardest one for me to tell the difference. Change in and of itself is scary and not peaceful. How do we have peace when change is not peaceful? In my life, I rely on prayer, on meditation on God’s Word (the Bible), and journaling.

Journaling helps deflate some of the emotion and helps us be more logical. I have guys that keep me accountable whom I use to process decisions and information. Sometimes just talking it out with a friend, mentor, or leader in the organization can make all the difference and bring peace.

5. Abundance

It is quite interesting how much easier change is when having an abundance mindset. What is an abundance mindset? It is the thought that resources, money, opportunities, and business are continually increasing. The alternative is the view that there is a certain amount of opportunity out there and that we are all trying to get a piece of it. I believe in abundance. Technological advances are happening all the time. We can always learn something new and be more efficient with our time. Good Change leads to abundance.

Michael Hyatt has a great podcast on abundance.

We all know that change is going to happen, so we must look for ways to embrace it through personal development and growth. By having a future-oriented mindset, the change will get more exciting when considering the possibilities. Staying optimistic and having a peace about the change will result in abundance in the long-term.
