When we want to be a “success” at something that usually means there is some type of goal we want to meet. In the business world, we are taught to meet our goals with strategies and tactics and employ something like the SMART method—setting goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely.
The SMART method, strategies and tactics are just tools to get us to the goal. What many people fail to realize is that you can have the best-laid plans, the most awesome strategies in place, but if you don’t have your “head game” in place, success won’t happen or at least it won’t happen easily or to the extent that you desire.
How often do you pay attention to your thoughts or examine your beliefs? This is where the real path to success starts.
When I work with coaching clients we first tackle thoughts and beliefs to determine what the unconscious programming is that is preventing or assisting success. Then, we work to break through blocks created by these unconscious programs. Once the blocks are removed, we can monitor success and evaluate results.
Do you constantly tell yourself that you stink at sales? Or that you aren’t creative enough at marketing? Or aren’t smart enough to be a finance whiz? What we tell ourselves is an indicator of what we create in our lives. So if you are constantly telling yourself you’re not good enough at your job, then you won’t be good at it. And then you wonder why you struggle with it? The self-fulfilling prophecy is true.
It’s very important to monitor your thoughts as this is where we determine our success or failure at anything in life.Studies show that we think at a rate of 1,300 words per minute. That’s a lot of thinking – a lot of opportunities for “stinkin’ thinkin’.” Start paying attention to what you think as your first line of defense, so to speak.
It’s one thing to think something or say something, but it’s another to believe it. You’ve probably heard the common phrase, “talk is cheap.” Yes, it’s easy to think or say something, but do you believe it? That is the better question.
In order to achieve something, you must first really believe you can achieve it. Think about that for a second. Think about anything you didn’t achieve in your life but wished you would have – even if it was winning the sack race in second grade. If you didn’t believe you could win that race, did you? Probably not. Now fast forward to adulthood. Think about something you didn’t accomplish and then ask yourself if you really believed you could achieve it. Chances are you didn’t believe it, and that’s why you didn’t achieve it.
It’s easy to get distracted by the “bright, shiny object” syndrome. You see the latest technology and think that if you have that, you will definitely be successful. Or you download the coolest app in hopes it will get you where you want to go. Again, these are tools. Tools are good, but first, we must lay the foundation. If you want success, start first by analyzing what’s in your head—your thoughts and beliefs.
Once you’ve mastered that, you are on your way to achieving anything you desire in life.
