As we near the end of another year, I thought it would be good to give out a list of the top 10 financially-related things to do at year-end for a small business. Don’t be too stressed if you don’t do all of this in December. You can always start doing them in the new year. Just pick one thing to do and start small. I am going to do numbers 6-10 in this article, and the final 5 next time.

Staticbrain.com states that “incompetence” is the number one reason for business failure. I know this seems harsh, but it isn’t too surprising. It is difficult to be good at everything. Most likely, a business is good at making a product or providing a service, but might not be good at planning, finance, accounting, pricing, taxes, and management.

Seek to Understand before Being Understood In today’s political and social environment, there seems to exist a lack of empathy for people with a different view, race, backgrounds, or religion. I am not going to really touch on these issues but only to frame the need for empathy and understanding of others in our society. In the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, one of the habits is to seek to understand others before you get them to understand your viewpoint. There is a John Maxwell quote I have heard quite often that says “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”.
